Top flight high school rodeo premiers in Sturgis

CINCH - May 30, 2018

DENVER, Colo. – The first-ever CINCH TEAM VARSITY CUP High School Rodeo produced by CINCH JEANS & SHIRTS showcases high school rodeo in an innovative new format. One elite student in each high school rodeo event is invited to compete on behalf of their high school, similar to a varsity team. Points from each student-athlete are tallied and added throughout the one-day event on May 30; the highest point-accumulating high school wins the Cup and a $1,500 cash prize.

The CINCH TEAM VARSITY CUP format inspires school spirit in small towns where high school rodeo athletes are among the best in the country. Participating schools in the 2018 event include Belle Fourche Broncs, Faith Longhorns, New Underwood Tigers, Philip Scotties, Rapid City Cobblers, Sturgis Scoopers, and Wall Eagles.

Ten high school rodeo events including – bareback riding, barrel racing, breakaway roping, bull riding, tie-down roping, goat tying, pole bending, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, team roping – will be featured at the CINCH TEAM VARSITY CUP. State Champions and National High School Qualifiers will be competing for their high schools, including Wall, S.D. bronc rider Cash Wilson.

Wilson is enthusiastic about the new format stating, "I'm excited about this new pre-season team rodeo. We are pumped to compete for the awards that Cinch has sponsored. There are a couple of schools that will be hard to get by. No matter what, it will be a fun night and great competition."

CINCH JEANS & SHIRTS Marketing Manager, Jessica Wahlert, describes CINCH's involvement as a natural evolution in CINCH's commitment to youth. "CINCH has always been about breaking boundaries. Our first big sponsorship was with the National High School Rodeo Association," Wahlert says. "As we look to further support and grow the future of our ranching, ag and community leaders, it was a no-brainer for us to find a new, competitive way to accelerate our high school athletes in rodeo."

The event will also likely lead to additional interest in high school rodeo as high schools recruit first-time participants to round out their team.

The CINCH TEAM VARSITY CUP is a CINCH rodeo production. Featured alongside the high school events is a celebrity chute dogging. The event is Wednesday, May 30 at 6 PM at the Sturgis Fairgrounds. As a free event, the community is invited to attend and cheer on their high school.
