Tuesday COVID-19 update – active cases decrease, hospitalizations rise

STURGIS, S.D. – State health officials reported 278 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday as the active caseload in the state dropped 95 to 4,179.

The number of people hospitalized due to COVID-19 jumped another 9, however, Tuesday to 250.

New cases across West River totaled 94 with Pennington County accounting for the most with 44. Pennington County’s total increases to 2,667 with 443 remaining active.

Lawrence County had the second highest amount of new cases Tuesday with 12 new cases. Lawrence County has a cumulative total of 487 with 104 remaining active.

In Meade County, 6 new cases were reported today, sending the cumulative total to 638. However, recoveries outpaced new cases Tuesday as active cases tumbled 10 to 116.

Elsewhere across West River, Todd County reported 11 new cases, Butte and Dewey County each added 4, Lyman, Tripp, and Custer added 2 new cases each and there was one new case each in Fall River, Oglala Lakota, Corson, Ziebach and Stanley counties.

No new deaths were reported today, keeping the state’s death toll at 248.

There were 1,034 new persons tested reported on Tuesday. The positivity rate for Tuesday is 27 percent.

Meanwhile, the latest COVID-19 update from South Dakota’s K-12 schools shows a cumulative total of 1,784. With 1,363 recoveries, the active number of cases this week is 421.

Locally, the Meade 46-1 School District’s latest report indicates no cases within the elementary school, 10 within the middle school and 2 within the high school.

Within South Dakota’s colleges and universities, 1,448 cases have been reported and 1,344 have recovered. That leaves 104 active cases.

Locally, Black Hills State University reports 10 active student cases and one active staff/faculty case. There are 47 currently in isolation or quarantine. At the South Dakota Mines, there are 9 active student cases and one active staff/faculty case. There are 21 currently in isolation or quarantine.
