Fatal fire in Lead

Two dead in house fire in Lead

News Staff - October 9, 2018

LEAD, S.D. - Two people are dead after a fire destroyed a home in Lead.

Fire crews responded to the fire on Parkdale Avenue at approximately 4:30 Saturday morning.

First arriving Firefighters found a free burning fire with heavy smoke conditions, in the top floor, attic and roof assembly of the occupied residential building, with partial roof collapse and immediately struck a second alarm.

Firefighters confined the fire to the structure of origin, stopping the spread of the flames to, nearby structures, infrastructure and other improvements, in addition to preventing a grass fire.

Fire Chief Tim Eggers said responders were unable to enter the home upon their arrival due to the high amount of smoke and flames engulfing the house.

Two civilians perished in the fire. There were no injuries to firefighters or domestic animals reported.  The residential structure received extensive damage.

Authorities say due to the extensive damage to the structure, responders were unable to enter the second floor even after the fire had been put out. An excavator was brought in to remove the roof and allow firefighters to locate the bodies upstairs.

Firefighters were on the scene until approximately 5:30 p.m. to mitigate the danger to nearby homes and retrieve the bodies. The names of the victims have not yet been released and the autopsies have not yet been completed.

The Lead Police Department, and the State Fire Marshall’s Office are continuing to investigate to determine the origin and matter of the fire.
