WDT satellite center hits snag over COVID-19 guidelines

DEADWOOD — The Western Dakota Technical College (WDT) satellite education center in Whitewood set to open in December, is experiencing a setback due to COVID-19 regulations.  Officials and organizers now know that mandated cleaning guidelines will result in costs that are nearly as much as the lease.

WDT hosted a ribbon cutting in July for its first satellite facility where college leaders will expand the WDT licensed practical nurse (LPN) program.  As such, the Whitewood Economic Development Organization (WEDO) requested the Lawrence County Commission assist the operation with a $250,000 revolving loan fund application that was set to be finalized this week.

But it has been determined the COVID cleaning standards that are required in classrooms will be cost prohibitive in relation to an already determined lease agreement on the building.

The loan approval process has been extended to the August 18 meeting of the Lawrence County Commission.
