BHSU Media Relations - September 9, 2018

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Payten Gilmore scored two touchdowns, but the Black Hills State University football team fell to Colorado School of Mines on Saturday afternoon, 42-20.

The Yellow Jackets (0-2, 0-2 RMAC) had the ball first, and were able to march down the field 45 yards, but after a missed 47-yard field goal, the Orediggers (2-0, 2-0 RMAC) took the ball 70 yards in five plays to take a 7-0 lead. After BHSU failed to score on the ensuing drive, Mines scored again to go up, 14-0.

The Green and Gold was driving the ball as the second quarter began, but faced a third and seven. Ryan Hommel kept the ball, rushing 27 yards for a first and goal at the Mines' nine-yard line. On the next play, Gilmore took the handoff and rushed the ball in for his second score of the year.

Colorado School of Mines responded with two quick scores of their own before the Yellow Jackets got the ball with 5:37 left in the half. BHSU drove 75-yards in 4:53, culminating in a Hommel 12-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Jefferson. The score was the first in a BHSU uniform for the transfer. The Orediggers quickly found the end zone before the end of the half, and took a 35-14 lead over the Yellow Jackets into the break.

The two teams traded off stalled drives to begin the second half, but with 4:41 remaining in the third quarter, Mines scored again, going up, 42-14. However, the Yellow Jackets responded with a scoring drive of their own, capped off with Gilmore catching a 17-yard touchdown from Hommel. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Orediggers led BHSU, 42-20. The fourth quarter remained scoreless, with neither offense able to move down the field, and Colorado School of Mines secured the RMAC victory.
