STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released a few more details regarding an accident that killed three men Tuesday afternoon near Whitewood.
Tony Mangan with the South Dakota Department of Public Safety says a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia Semi was travelling eastbound on Interstate 90 at mile marker 25 when it was struck from behind by a 2015 Maserati.
The Maserati struck the back of the semi-trailer at a high rate of speed.
There were 3 occupants in the Maserati and they were all pronounced dead at the scene. All three were wearing seat belts. They were 21, 22 and 55-years old. The 21-year-old was reportedly driving.
The two occupants of the semi, a 77-year-old driver and 74-year-old passenger, were not hurt.
Names of the victims are not being released yet pending notification of relatives.
Investigators remained on scene for several hours after the crash Tuesday afternoon as another semi had to be brought in to take the load that was in the trailer involved in the crash.
The accident happened just after 2:00 p.m.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.

STURGIS, S.D. – A crash east of Whitewood on I-90 Tuesday afternoon has reportedly resulted in three fatalities.
The crash occurred after 2:00 p.m. and involved a passenger car and a semi truck. KBHB News drove through the accident scene shortly after it happened and it appears the passenger car crashed into the back of the semi’s trailer at a high rate of speed. The car was completely destroyed and the truck’s trailer showed damage from the car going underneath it.
When KBHB News went through, there was still debris on the highway as traffic was being slowed to a crawl. Investigators remained on scene for several hours after the crash and another semi was brought in to unload the trailer that was involved in the crash.
Tony Mangan, Department of Public Safety public information officer, said the Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
The accident happened in the eastbound lane, on top of the hill a couple of miles east of Whitewood.
