Accident reports continue to come in due to poor road conditions

STURGIS, S.D. – Freezing drizzle and fog made roads icy and slippery for the Thursday morning commute.

Area law enforcement reported responding to numerous calls for accidents and vehicles sliding off roads.

Among the reports of accidents were between Whitewood and Belle Fourche on Highway 34 and on I-90 between Wall and Rapid City.

A motorist posted on social media two trucks that had rolled over on Highway 34 near St Onge. Video showed the two trucks next to each other lying on their driver’s side. Cargo had spilled out of one of the semi’s.

Out on the Western South Dakota plains, a truck that had gotten stuck on the Interstate caused a large backup of traffic between Wasta and Wall on the eastbound side.

I-90 was also reportedly icy between Whitewood and Spearfish, and in Spearfish, icy roads led to a late start for the Spearfish School District.

Law enforcement are encouraging motorists to slow down for the poor road conditions that are continuing throughout the day.  SD511 showed most roads across western South Dakota as scattered ice covered and slippery.
