Active cases of COVID-19 drop below 1,000 for first time since August

PIERRE, S.D. – Thursday’s COVID-19 Update from the state Department of Health indicated 83 new cases with 26 of those listed as probable.

Active cases have dropped below 1,000 for the first time since August of last year. As of today, the state reported 936 active cases.

The number of people hospitalized was up by 2 over yesterday to 68 and one new death was reported. The new death reported was a woman in the 80+ age range from Pennington County. Pennington County has now had 194 deaths since the pandemic began. The state’s death total is now 1,989.

Across the Black Hills area, Pennington County reported 10 total new cases today with 3 of those listed as probable.

Meade County added 6 new cases Thursday and Lawrence County had 2 confirmed  cases and one new probable case.

Custer County had 3 new cases and Butte County added one new case.

While the state announced Wednesday vaccines can now be given to anyone 12-years-old and above, the state’s dashboard shows the vaccine data still reflects numbers for shots given to those 16-years-old and above.

As of Thursday, 55.99% of the population eligible for the vaccine in South Dakota has received at least one dose while 50.29% have completed the vaccination series.
