Active cases of COVID-19 surpass 2,000 for first time since February

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Health Department says active COVID-19 cases have surpassed 2,000 for the first time since February.

In their daily report Thursday, health officials say there are 2,131 active  cases of the virus across South Dakota.

New cases across the state totaled 298 today, with 24 listed as probable.

COVID-19 related hospitalizations have also gone up, as the health department reported 125 people in the hospital – up from Wednesday’s 105.

One new death was reported, putting the state’s death toll at 2,057.

Across West River, there were 139 confirmed cases.

Pennington County had 65 and Meade County added 27.

Butte County reported 17 new cases and Lawrence County totaled 15.

Elsewhere, there were eight each in Corson and Custer Counties, four each in Fall River and Todd, two in Oglala Lakota, one each in Stanley Haakon, Lyman and Tripp Counties.

There were 12 probable cases reported West River with eight in Pennington County and two each in Haakon and Oglala Lakota.
