Active cases rise to record high in Sunday COVID-19 report

STURGIS, S.D. – The number of active cases and hospitalizations were up Sunday, but the number of new cases were down over yesterday in the Department of Health daily COVID-19 report.

Health officials reported 412 new cases of coronavirus, down from yesterday’s 579. The number of active cases, however, increased by 48 today to 3,790. That is the highest number of active cases the state has ever seen.

The number of people hospitalized due to the virus also grew by 3 today to 216.

The state’s COVID-19-related death toll remained at 218.

As for new cases around the Black Hills area, Pennington County saw the most with 62 new cases. Pennington County now has 2,311 total cases with 429 remaining active. Active cases are up 27 today.

In Meade County, 18 new cases were tallied sending the cumulative total to 537. Of those, 120 remain active. The active caseload is up 9 Sunday in Meade.

Lawrence County recorded 7 new cases today, sending the total to 402 with 103 active cases. The active caseload is up 3 Sunday in Lawrence.

Butte County reported 5 new cases, giving them 102 total with 33 active.

Custer County added 3 new cases and Oglala Lakota reported 11 new cases. Custer’s active caseload is 37 and Oglala Lakota County saw their active cases rise 8 to 72.

Fall River County added 1 new case Sunday for a total of 94 with 13 remaining active.

A total of 1,374 new persons tested was reported on Sunday.
