STURGIS, S.D. – COVID-19 cases continue to reach new highs in South Dakota as the Department of Health reported Sunday 434 new cases and a new high of 4,268 active cases.
Hospitalizations have also reached a new high today, with 232 people hospitalized due to COVID-19. That is up 17 from Saturday. According to the state’s website, COVID-19 patients account for 10-percent of all hospital beds. As for I.C.U. beds, COVID-19 patients account for 16-percent. Ventilator use among COVID-19 patients in the state is at 4-percent.
Around the Black Hills region, there were 82 new positive tests for COVID-19.
Pennington County had the most with 39 new cases, sending the cumulative total to 2,607. Of those, 449 remain active.
In Meade County, 19 new COVID-19 cases were reported. Meade County’s cumulative total jumps to 627 with 124 active cases.
In Lawrence County, there were 9 new cases, sending the cumulative total to 466 with 96 remaining active.
Butte County saw 5 new cases Sunday, giving them a total of 127 with 38 active.
Other new cases across West River include 7 in Todd, 6 in Oglala Lakota, 5 in Dewey, 4 in Lyman, 3 each in Tripp and Bennett, 2 each in Custer, Fall River, Perkins and Gregory, and one each in Harding, Haakon and Jackson counties.
In all, there were 113 new cases scattered across West River Sunday.
No new deaths were reported Sunday, keeping the state’s death toll at 248.
