STURGIS, S.D. – Cases of COVID-19 increased for a second week in a row according to the Department of Health’s weekly report.
Total cases statewide included 170 confirmed cases and 30 probable cases for a total of 200. That compares to 113 last week.
The number of active cases totals 290 today, up from last week’s 208.
And, the number of hospitalizations increased by 18 from last week’s 20 to 38 this week.
One new death was reported this week, sending the state’s total to 2,041. The new death was a man in the 60-69 age group.
Cases increased across all of the Black Hills area counties.
Pennington County reported 30 confirmed cases and 8 probable for a total of 38. That compares to 31 last week.
Both Lawrence and Meade Counties reported 9 new cases.
Oglala Lakota County tallied 5 new cases this week and Fall River County added 2 new cases.
Butte County added 2 new cases and Harding County reported one new case.
Statewide, there are now eight counties listed as having “moderate” community spread. Minnehaha County has the highest active case count at 74, while Pennington County has 65 active cases. Other counties listed with “moderate” spread are Lincoln, Charles Mix, Dewey, Butte, Meade and Lawrence.
As for the vaccination effort, numbers increased slightly over the past week.
As of Wednesday, 57.85% of the population 12-years-old and above has received at least one dose while 53.58% have completed the vaccination series.
