Activities Association announces tournament locations for 2021

UNDATED – At the conclusion of this year’s basketball season, the format of combining the boys and girls state tournaments for both ‘AA’ and ‘A’ will go away. State Basketball in South Dakota is about to go back to the way it was before – all three girls’ tournaments one week and then all three boys’ tournaments the following week.

The current system, which again, exists through the current season, is just one basketball tournament one week, ‘B’ girls, and then the remaining five tournaments the next week.

With the format going back to the way it was, two additional locations were required to fill the requirements for the girls’ tournaments. Originally, the ‘AA’ girls would have been in Rapid City in 2021 with the ‘AA’ boys, and the ‘A’ girls would have been in Sioux Falls with the ‘A’ boys.

On Wednesday, the South Dakota High School Activities Association approved both the Sanford Pentagon and the Huron Arena as additional venues for the spring of 2021. The Class B girls were originally slated to have their tournament at the Watertown Civic Center next spring, but because of past attendance numbers with the ‘A’ girls’ tournament, it was decided to have that tournament in Watertown, and move the ‘B’ girls’ tournament to the Huron Arena.

The state basketball tournaments this spring will include the girls’ ‘B’ tournament in Spearfish on March 12-14 with the five remaining tournaments taking place in Sioux Falls (AA), Rapid City (A), and Aberdeen (B Boys).
