PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Health on Monday moved all of western South Dakota into the high spread category as COVID-19 continues its run across South Dakota.
There were 463 new cases reported today, with 73 of those listed as probable. Of the new cases, nearly half of them are scattered across the Black Hills region.
Active cases increased 334 today to 4,326 and the number of people hospitalized totaled 168.
Five new deaths have been reported, sending the state’s death toll to 2,067. Four of the five new deaths were West River with two in Butte County, one in Meade and the other out of Pennington County.
Across the Black Hills, Pennington County had the most cases today with 103 confirmed and 27 probable for a total of 130.
Meade County had the second most with 27 confirmed and 7 probable for a total of 34.
Lawrence County had the third highest amount with 28 and Butte County added 11 confirmed and 2 probable cases for a total of 13.
Elsewhere, Custer County had 9 new cases, Fall River added 8, there were 2 in Oglala Lakota and Harding County added a new COVID-19 case.
The Black Hills Region continued to list the most COVID-19 hospitalizations with 84. Of those, 20 are in the I.C.U. and 13 are on ventilators.
