AMA Racing officials unveil new plan for downtown race

STURGIS, S.D. – Officials with AMA Pro Racing held a public forum Tuesday night to present their new proposal for a proposed flat track race to be held downtown Sturgis on the final day of this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

The new proposal follows a vote last month in which citizens turned down a host services agreement that had the city covering a portion of the cost to put on the race.

Cameron Gray and David McGrath with AMA Pro Racing and AFT Events were on hand to unveil a new plan that involves no cost to the city.

McGrath says AFT Events will cover the expense for the first two years and should there be a financial shortfall in 2024, sponsorship revenue generated in 2025 will first be allocated to offset any deficit from the previous year.

McGrath says once sponsorship revenue exceeds expense liability, the city of Sturgis and AFT Events will share the net income equally.

The proposed race track is also shorter and would run down Main Street, up Third Street, to Sherman Street, over a dirt section to Harley Davidson Way and back onto Main Street.

Gray says the new track is less invasive and more exciting.

Gray says this is still a win-win for the city of Sturgis, especially with plans by the Fox Television Network to televise it.

Up next is for the Sturgis Council to revisit the new proposal and either approve or disapprove the new contract. That will need to happen sooner rather than later though. Gray says they will more than likely need an answer by the end of the month for executives from the Fox Television Network.
