SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The South Dakota Board of Regents has approved a new American Civic Certificate that will be offered at all of South Dakota’s public universities. The certificate is a collaborative effort of the Board’s Academic Affairs Council.
According to the Regents, “This four-course certificate prepares students with the foundational knowledge to understand current debates through the lens of history, political structures, and differing perspectives so as to cultivate an educated and engaged citizenry.”
The new program is funded by the south Dakota legislature which granted the Department of Education $900,000 to develop the South Dakota Civics and History Initiative to strengthen civics and history education for both elementary and secondary students.
