Another round of Severe Weather hits area

STURGIS, S.D. – Severe weather brought another afternoon of gusty winds, hail and heavy rain to parts of the area yesterday.

The first round of thunderstorms moved in mid-afternoon and parts of Sturgis received quarter sized hail. That stormed rolled in around 3:30 and moved eastward onto the plains.

Another batch of thunderstorms moved in Thursday evening from northeast Wyoming carrying destructive winds. Sturgis got mostly rain and the gusty winds. Those winds reportedly brought down a fireworks tent set up just off I-90’s Exit 32.

Winds of 60-plus miles per hour were common as it moved across the Black Hills area and higher wind gusts were reported on the plains.

The National Weather Service says a thunderstorm producing 80 mph winds and golfball sized hail moved over northern Haakon County last night.
