Area fire crews respond to Monday fires near Sturgis, Wasta

STURGIS, S.D. – Area fire crews were busy Monday, battling a couple of fires in the Sturgis and Wasta area.

Monday morning, the high winds caused some power lines to blow into each other sparking a small grass fire and power outage by the Sturgis Wastewater Treatment Facilty.

Thanks to the quick response of the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department and other agencies as well as Black Hills Power & Light it was isolated to under an Acre and Power Crews worked to restore power.
That power outage affected KBHB Radio, knocking out our main transmitter until power was restored.

Meanwhile, fire crews in the Wasta area battled dry conditions and high winds to knock down a fire believed to have started in some hay bales.

Fire officials say some observant neighbors noticed smoke coming from some bales on ranch land near Wasta Monday afternoon.

Fire departments from Wasta, New Underwood, Wall, Box Elder and Ellsworth Air Force Base all responded to the blaze, and kept the fire to less than an acre of surrounding land around the burning hay piles.
