As Rally begins, COVID-19 cases increase by 23 in Pennington, Lawrence and Meade counties

STURGIS, S.D. – As the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally begins, cases of COVID-19 around the Black Hills continue to climb.

In the Friday report from the South Dakota Department of Health, there were 26 new cases reported around the Black Hills region.

Pennington County had the most, reporting 12 new cases. Meade County reported 5 new cases and Lawrence County had 6 new cases. Custer County added 3 new cases and Fall River county added an additional two.

Pennington County saw their cumulative total rise to 875 Friday, with 123 active cases. That is up five from yesterday.

Meade County has 87 total cases and of those, 22 remain active. That is up 4 from Thursday.

Lawrence County has 46 total with 20 active cases and Custer has 29 total cases with 9 of those active.

Fall River has 22 total cases with 6 active.

Elsewhere around western South Dakota, Oglala Lakota reported one new case Friday. There are 23 active cases in Oglala Lakota County – down two from Thursday.

The statewide active number of cases is down four today to 983.

The number of people hospitalized is up 3 Friday to 47.

Three new COVID-19 related deaths were reported today. Two deaths were in Minnehaha County and the other death was in Todd County. Among them was a person in their 20’s. The other two were in the 70-79 and 80-plus age range.

As for recoveries, South Dakota now has 8,244 total recoveries from the virus, 99 more than the 8,145 on Thursday.
