RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Rapid City woman has been arrested for allowing children access to marijuana edibles.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says 36-year-old Sandra Pashby is accused of leaving drugs where young children could access them, which ultimately were consumed by two elementary aged students on Friday, April 9.
The drugs were marijuana edibles.
The 10 and 11 year olds ate what looked like candy and became severely ill at school. Initially the effects of the marijuana edibles impaired the children’s ability to walk and talk.
Authorities say the amount of the marijuana edibles consumed resulted in a rapid decline in their health and cognitive ability, to include causing hallucinations.
Pennington County School Resource Officers at Valley View Elementary School intervened and called for emergency medical support. Both children were hospitalized overnight due to the exposure, but have since recovered.
Pashby is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (class 5 felony SDCL 22-42-5) and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor or Abuse Neglect of a Minor (Class 1 misdemeanor SDCL 26-9-1).
