STURGIS, S.D. – Authorities in Sturgis have identified the man shot and killed after he reportedly broke into a home early Sunday morning.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says an autopsy is pending on 32-year-old Matthew Flagler.
Flagler was shot once in the chest after entering a home in north Sturgis just before 4:30 Sunday morning. The homeowner initially called police when they heard someone messing with their vehicles outside. The homeowner yelled at the man, but Flagler entered the home and refused to leave.
First aid was administered until he was transported by ambulance to Sturgis Regional Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.
VanDewater says no charges have been filed against the homeowner as of yet, and it remains an active investigation.
“This is still an ongoing investigation and we are documenting all the facts and will then send off to the State’s Attorney for her review.”
VanDewater stressed this is an isolated incident and there is not threat to the public.
