STURGIS, S.D. – At their meeting Monday night, Sturgis City Council members heard from a concerned citizen on the condition of Avalanche Road.
Jennifer Verhey says the road is in bad shape.
The road is overseen by the county, although residents would like to see cooperation on the road between the city and county.
Sturgis Public Works Director Rick Bush says they had some meetings with the county.
Bush says they are discussing maintenance on the road.
Verhey told council members the county has told them they don’t have the equipment to maintain it and have multiple other priorities ahead of it.
However, Meade County Commissioner Doreen Creed disagrees with that statement. She says the county regularly blades, maintains and applies mag water in an attempt to control dust and road structure. Creed says this has not been an easy or 100 percent successful task.
