STURGIS, S.D. — A contingent of groups and businesses came together to help give the Sturgis Brown High School Class of 2020 a lift in these uncertain times.
Not being able to hold a traditional graduation ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the community came together to have banners made featuring every member of this year’s graduating class.
The banners were put up by the city of Sturgis Public Works Department this week.
Helping to spearhead the effort was Rosemary Roth.
“We talked to some people and got the Downtown Foundation and the Greater Sturgis Area Foundation together and then the Optimists’ stepped up and all of a sudden we had enough money and Homeslice Media Group came in to help get the layout done and the technical things done to get the pictures of the students on the banners.”
The pictures were provided by the school – senior pictures that will be included in the yearbook. They are double-sided with a different graduating senior on each side.
Roth was so encouraged by the comng-together of people in Sturgis to make this happen.
“It has been such a good lift and I’m really proud of our town and how people came together and said ‘yes, let’s do this, it’s the right thing to do.'”
The banners hang along Junction Avenue, Lazelle Street and historic Main Street.
