SPEARFISH, S.D. – Similar to the first meeting between the pair of teams, the Black Hills State University men’s basketball team overcame a double digit deficit to defeat UCCS by a score of 75-66 on Saturday afternoon in A2 Arena to secure the season sweep.
The Yellow Jackets responded to an 18-2 UCCS run that pushed their lead to 13 points with a 16-2 rally of their own to regain the lead with just under 11 minutes to play.
The story of the game, however, wouldn’t be the pair of scoring runs, it would be the lock down second half defense continued to be put on by the Green & Gold in now each of their last four home victories as they held the Mountain Lions to just 5-of-31 (16.1%) from the field and 1-of-10 (10.0%) from 3-point range in the second half. Even after UCCS made three of their first five shot attempts out of the halftime break, BHSU held them to just 2-of-26 in the final 17:10 and forced them to miss their final 12 shots over the last eight minutes of action.
In the women’s game, The Yellow Jackets had four players in double-digits as they were able to hold off two late misses from UCCS en rout to a 72-68 win over the Mountain Lions, who were only a game back of them in the standings heading into this matchup.
The Yellow Jackets watched a 12-point lead in fourth disappear, but Morgan Hammerbeck was able to hit two clutch free throws to give BHSU the win. Bradie Schlabs led the team in scoring for the second game in a row with 18, and despite a lot of fouls being called, BHSU was able to survive for their third straight win.
