BHSU Volleyball Splits Non-Conference Pod

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Black Hills State volleyball split their home non-conference pod this weekend winning against UMary, 3-1, and losing to MSU Billings, 2-3, Sunday afternoon.

BHSU (5-5,3-4 RMAC) vs UMary (1-2, 0-0 NSIC)

The Yellow Jackets lost set one against the Marauders 23-25, won set two 25-18, won set three 25-10, and finished off their games against the Marauders with a 25-14 win.

Sierra Ward led the team with 13 kills and two blocks.

Karly Marx led the team in assists with 30.

Alexis Trowbridge paced the team with 17 assists and 11 digs.

Peyton Bodemann led the team in aces with three.

Haedyn Rhoades recorded two aces of her own to go with 25 digs.

In set one the Yellow Jackets fell behind early finding themselves with a five-point deficit early in the contest. However, a 9-4 scoring run by the Jackets tied the game at 19 all before the teams would battle for the final points of the set. Ultimately the Marauders would take the set by two 25-23 over BHSU.

Kindra Cerrone paced the Yellow Jackets in the second set with six kills and two digs. The Yellow Jackets started the set strong going up 6-3 early. BHSU would not relinquish that lead throughout the set leading by as many as eight points. A kill by Madison Hoopman would secure the victory for the Yellow Jackets at 25-18.

Set three saw the Yellow Jackets come out locked in going on a 5-0 run to open the set. UMary would then get a point on the board before BHSU would add 8 more to their total. Down by 12 the Marauders would not beable overcome the steep deficit and BHSU would record the set victory 25-10 behind strong serving from Cerrone, Bodemann, and Marx.

BHSU would jump out to a 7-3 lead in set four behind strong serving from Cerrone. That lead would prove to be too much for the Marauders to overcome as the Yellow Jackets would continue to add points in runs throughout the set. A kill from Shannon Nelson would seal the set and the game for BHSU at 25-14.

BHSU vs MSU Billings (3-1, 0-0 GNAC)

After a break the Yellow Jackets would take on MSU Billings winning set one 25-16, losing sets two and three 20-25, winning set four 25-13, and finishing off a competitive afternoon losing set five 13-15.

Madison Hoopman led the team against MSU Billings with 15 kills and a block.

Karly Marx (26) and Alexis Trowbridge (21) led the Yellow Jackets in assists.

Haedyn Rhoades helped set the pace leading the team in digs with 13.

Peyton Bodemann was on fire from the service line dropping five aces throughout the match.

In set one the teams came out evenly matched trading points before BHSU would go on an 5-0 scoring run to put them up 22-13. Mariah Robinson would find an open spot in the middle of the court to record a kill to end the set 25-16.

BHSU would keep the competitive atmosphere going into the second set trading points with MSU Billings through the set. Throughout set two the teams would be even 11 times. However, a 5-0 run to close out the game by MSU Billings would set up the final score 25-20 in favor of MSU Billings.

Another close set would be on the books for set three. The Yellow Jackets and MSU Billings would trade points again until MSU Billings would go on a scoring run and set the score at 16-21. This slight deficit would prove to be too much for the Yellow Jackets to overcome as they dropped set three 20-25.

The Yellow Jackets came alive defensively in the fourth set with seven Yellow Jackets recording kills. BHSU would get ahead early outscoring MSU Billings 10-4 to open the set. Behind strong serving from Peyton Bodemann, BHSU would keep that pace for the rest of the match winning 25-13.

The game deciding set would prove to be an extension of the day with both teams playing fiercely for the victory. The Yellow Jackets would find themselves up early 5-3 over MSU Billings before MSU Billings would go on a short 4-2 run tying the game at seven all. The teams would each take their turn going on short runs before the set would be tied up at 12 all. MSU Billings would outscore the Yellow Jackets 3-1 to take the set and match victory at 15-13 and 3-2.
