The grant and volunteer support to Black Hills Area Habitat will help complete a four home development called East Madison Village that will be sold affordably to owner applicants. Black Hills area Habitat builds affordable/workforce housing via single family homes, townhomes, and new home developments.
On Sept. 10, Wells Fargo volunteers from Wells Fargo Bank in Rapid City joined Black Hills Area Habitat to install flooring in a new townhome development at the corner of Spruce and Madison Streets in Rapid City.
“Thanks to the generosity of Wells Fargo, we are building stronger communities right here in the Black Hills. Children of homeowners are 116 percent more likely to graduate from college compared with children in families who do not own their homes,” said Scott Engmann, Executive Director for Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity. “We also know that owning a home increases positive health outcomes and builds financial stability.”
At least one in 11 South Dakota households spend over half of their income on housing and the number of Black Hills families who are struggling to afford rent is on the rise. The Wells Fargo grant will support Black Hills Area Habitat’s efforts to increase access to affordable homes.
“I am proud to support the work Black Hills Area Habitat is doing to create equitable housing,” said Kristi Standing High, District Branch Network Senior Manager for Wells Fargo. “It’s also part of Wells Fargo’s commitment to putting people and communities first—that’s what our team does when we roll up our sleeves to volunteer at a Habitat build, as we just did in Rapid City. By providing both financial and volunteer support, we get to be part of families’ journeys to homeownership and see their dreams become a reality.”
This funding is part of a $6.375 million donation to Habitat for Humanity International through the 2024 Wells Fargo Builds program to help support more than 290 families in communities nationwide.
