Blizzard conditions lead to accidents; no travel advisories

STURGIS, S.D. – A robust spring snow storm has brought blizzard conditions to the Black Hills and surrounding foothills, and have led to no travel advisories across the area.

The weather quickly deteriorated Saturday afternoon, and the National Weather Service ended up not only extending the blizzard warning, but also adding to its list of winter weather advisories.

Added were a winter storm warning for the remainder of Meade and Pennington County. Winter weather advisories were added to counties of Interstate 90, including Oglala Lakota, Fall River, Bennett and Jackson counties.

No travel advisories are up for major arterial highways in the Black Hills, the northern hills and northwest South Dakota. No travel is advised on I-90 from the Wyoming line to Wall.

In Sturgis, police say they waited as long as they could, in hopes people would stay off the roads. But, as conditions  got worse, they decided to issue a no travel advisory in town.

In a Facebook post, Sturgis Police wrote “We held off as long as we could, but with deteriorating conditions, we are issuing a no travel advisory in and around Sturgis. Visibility is limited and the roads are treacherous.  Please stay home so our Public Works crews can safely plow emergency routes for our first responders.”

There are reports of vehicles stuck in snow drifts around town and that will hamper road crews when they get out to clear overnight.
Along the I-90 corridor, there have been reports of a number of accidents.
There are numerous vehicles in ditches between Wall and Rapid City. The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office say they, along with the Highway Patrol, are encouraging people to stay off the roads. A Pennington County deputy’s vehicle was rear ended near mile marker 88 while responding to an accident. No injuries were reported. A roll over was also reported by the sheriff’s office near the Keystone Wye.

The howling wind has made it hard to see, cutting visibility down to near zero in some areas.
The weather service says it hard to measure  snow totals so far because of the wind, but it has received reports of drifts 2 to 3 feet high in Spearfish and Sturgis.
