Bomb threat leads to evacuation of South Dakota Mines campus

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Students at the South Dakota School of Mines were allowed back onto campus this morning after being evacuated Friday night due to a bomb threat.

The announcement came down just after 6:00 p.m. as students and faculty were told to evacuate to the Central States Fairground event center.

Rapid City Police, Rapid City Fire, Highway Patrol, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, F.B.I. and members of the Ellsworth Air Force Base bomb squad and sniffing dog unit spent the night sweeping the campus to make sure it was safe.

There has been no further information released on the nature of the threat, which remains under investigation.

South Dakota Mines President Jim Rankin thanked the entire campus community, law enforcement and other who helped accommodate students overnight.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Students have been evacuated from the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines Friday night following a bomb threat to the campus, and will not be returning until at least tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

At this time, no evidence has been located indicating the threat is genuine, but Rapid City Police remain on scene.

Students were asked to evacuate to the Pennington County Fairgrounds event center for instructions.

Beds have been provided for students at Camp Rapid National Guard base.

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City police say the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines has been evacuated due to a bomb threat.

In a statement, students and faculty were being asked to avoid the area and make their way to the Central States Fairgrounds until given further notice.

Rapid City Fire and Police departments have units staged in the area, with RCPD conducting the investigation.

In a Friday evening tweet, RCPD said “While no evidence of a real threat has been located at this time, all precautionary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the campus as well as its students. This includes a precautionary evacuation of the university campus.”
