Brandon Delzer Legacy Livestock Exhibitor recipient to be selected at Meade County Fair

STURGIS, SD – When he was 11 years old, Brandon Delzer, who was a member of the Bear Butte Valley 4-H Club at the time, wrote this about the Meade County Fair. “There are so many things to do (at the Fair) I can’t even name my favorite.”

Enthusiastic, kind, generous, are all words used to describe Brandon. And its those characteristics that have left an indelible mark after he passed away in 2013.

Since then, his giving spirit has embodied a continued presence in the 4-H community and the greater Sturgis community at large – especially at Fair time.

He enjoyed and exceled at many things in the course of his young life, running cross country being one of them. Hundreds of participants will line up for what is now the 9th Annual  Brandon Delzer 5K Run/Walk set for Sat., July 30. Registration begins at 7:00am at the Sturgis Brown High School. Top 3 places awarded in five age divisions: 12 and under, 13-18, 19-29, 30-49, 50 and up. All proceeds from the $10 registration fee go to the Brandon Delzer Legacy Scholarship and Meade County 4-H.

Brandon was a runner, 4-Her, and all-around athlete who was just as likely to be found in the barn as at a track meet.  At this year’s Meade County Fair, the Brandon Delzer Legacy Livestock Exhibitor recipient will be selected for the first time.

Jenny Voight, 4-H Advisor says the award was developed to recognize others with the same characteristics that Brandon brought to everything he did and to the Meade County Fair.

According to Voight, this exhibitor will go above and beyond while exhibiting their animals at the Meade County Fair & 4-H Achievement Days.  The winner will be announced on Saturday before the Meade County Premium Livestock Sale at 3:30pm and the buckle will be awarded at the recognition event in November.

An unidentified judge(s) will be circulating among those participating in the livestock portion of the Fair.

The Meade County Fair & 4-H Achievement Days is free to the public.  Tonight’s events include a free appreciation barbecue, mutton busting and calf scramble. The Fair Book and a complete schedule for the Meade County Fair can be found here.
