Law Enforcement in Rapid City involved in reported break in and barricade

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City area law enforcement were dispatched to a home Thursday morning following reports of a break-in at 5002 S Canyon Rd.

The homeowner left the home immediately and after police arrived they believed the subject may still be inside the home.

Meeting with the homeowner, they described the suspect as a male dressed in black.

Law enforcement used a K-9, drones and a robot to search the home, and no suspect was found. By 2:00 p.m. Thursday, officials had cleared the home.

Investigators believe a potential delay between the time the homeowner heard the intruder and the call to 911 may have allowed the suspect time to escape before officers fully secured the area.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are actively seeking information from the public. RCPD has requested that residents near the 5000 block of South Canyon Road review home security camera footage captured between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Thursday for any sign of the suspect, described as a male dressed in black.
