STURGIS, S.D. – Law enforcement and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation are looking into an officer involved shooting that took place just after 10:00 a.m. Wednesday morning at Sturgis.

Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater and Meade County Sheriff Pat West said during today’s Rally Press Conference that they couldn’t release many details about the incident, other than to say it involved a South Dakota Highway Trooper and an unidentified male.

The shooting happened on Junction Avenue near the intersection with Dixon Drive on the south side of Sturgis just past the I-90, Exit 32 interchange.

Sheriff West says the trooper was not hurt, but could not release the condition of the male who was shot. Furthermore, Chief Vandewater says there were no other injuries and there was no ongoing threat to public safety.

In a release Wednesday afternoon, South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley confirmed the man who was shot was still alive and that his office would be working with state, local and federal law enforcement on the investigation.

He says they will process the crime scene, conduct a forensic examination of all collected evidence, interview officers and witnesses and review all video cameras from the area.

He says they expect to release a report into the shooting within 30 days.
