Structure fire destroys shop, burns 2 acres between Sturgis, Whitewood Saturday

STURGIS, S.D. – Fire crews from several agencies battled a structure fire Saturday afternoon at 12335 Whitewood Service Road.

Thick, black smoke from the fire could be seen for miles as fire crews rushed to the scene.

The structure is reported to be a shop just inside Lawrence County. The shop was destroyed and the fire burned 2.4 acres of surrounding grass.

Law enforcement did have the service road in the area of the fire shut down for fire crews during the blaze, although neighboring Interstate 90 remained open.

Fire crews battled weather conditions, with hot, dry and wind hampering efforts.

Whitewood Fire Crews were among the first on scene and they were aided by St Onge Volunteer Fire Department, Sturgis Volunteer Fire and Ambulance, Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department, Forest Service, Ft Meade, Vale Volunteer Fire Department and the Butte Volunteer Fire Department.

Whitewood Fire also thanked the Sturgis McDonald’s for feeding the firefighters, who were on scene well into Saturday evening. The fire was initially reported at 3:19 p.m.

There were no injuries initially reported and the cause of the fire was being investigated.
