Cal woman dies from injuries sustained in July crash

STURGIS, S.D. – The highway patrol says a California woman has died from injuries sustained in an I-90 crash last month.

The crash happened on July 18th, five miles west of Piedmont, SD.

Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2006 Toyota Highlander was traveling eastbound on Interstate 90 near mile marker 41 when a deer entered the roadway from the median. It missed a vehicle in the left lane, jumped, and went through the windshield of the Highlander. The front passenger steered the vehicle off the roadway to the right, eventually coming to rest in the south ditch of Sturgis Road. Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash.

The patrol has not released the name of the 38-year-old driver, but say she was from California and was driving the Highlander at the time of the incident.

A 5-year-old in the vehicle suffered minor injuries while a 3-year-old and a 40-year-old male were not hurt.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
