Carolyn K. Hoppe

Carolyn K. Hoppe, 75, Sturgis, SD passed away Saturday, March 9, 2024 at The Village at Skyline Pines in Rapid City.  Memorial Services for Carolyn will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 14, 2024 at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis.  Inurnment will be in the Reliance Cemetery at a later date.

Carolyn K. Schaefer was born December 3, 1948 to Arnold D. and Karolina (Drafahl) Schaefer at Chamberlain.  She was raised in the Reliance area, where she graduated from Reliance High School in 1967.  She then attended nursing school in Alliance, NE, where she started her career as a nurse.  On leap day, February 29, 1968, she met Roland Hoppe at Brownies Marina and Restaurant in Chamberlain.  They were married at the Reliance Methodist Church on June 7, 1969.  They lived in Chamberlain, where she worked as a nurse at the Chamberlain Hospital.  In September of 1978, they moved to Sturgis, where she worked in the Sturgis Hospital for over 30 years.  Carolyn and Rollie moved to Idaho in 2010, before returning to Sturgis in 2019.

Carolyn found joy in reading, gardening, playing cards, and teaching her grandchildren to crochet. She cherished her grandchildren and great- grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of love that spans generations. A proud survivor of breast cancer, she also cherished the camaraderie of the Red Hat Society, savoring shared moments of happiness with friends in South Dakota and Idaho.

Survivors include her husband Roland, Sturgis; sons, Rodell (Lori) Hoppe, Sturgis and Ryan (Corinne) Hoppe, Meridian, ID; grandchildren, Seth (Madison) Hoppe, Kaitlyn Hoppe, Ashley Hoppe, Cassandra (Jeff) Reed, and Mary (Danny) Strain; great-grandchildren, Henrik Hoppe, Ellenore Hoppe, Westin Hoppe, Jocelyn Reed, Hudson Strain, and Harper Strain; brothers, Dalbert (Mary) Schaefer, Reliance, and Wesley (Judy) Schaefer, Gillette, WY; and sister, Catherine Peterson, Kennebec.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Karolina; five brothers, Arnold Jr., Ronald, Leonard, Kenneth, and Gary; and a sister, Ruth.
