CHADRON, Neb. – Black Hills State softball dropped its doubleheader to Chadron State on Thursday, 18-4 and 14-12.
The Yellow Jackets (10-22, 8-22 RMAC) supplied plenty of offense on the day, but the Eagles’ offense wouldn’t back down.
BHSU totaled 16 runs on Thursday on 26 hits, five for extra bases including three home runs.
Game One (L, 8-4)
After Crystal Amaral struck out the side to open the game, a Gianna Haley infield single in the bottom of the first, along with three walks in the inning, gave the Yellow Jackets an early 2-0 lead.
The Eagles would get two back in the second, though, and add on in the third to move ahead 4-2.
Down 5-2 in the fifth, the Yellow Jackets strung together three singles in a row to load the bases before Shayla Tuschen made it four straight with a 2-RBI single to pull the team back within a run, 5-4, through five innings of play.
But CSC would tack on three more the rest of the way as BHSU eventually fell by a score of 8-4.
Game Two (L, 14-12)
Down 2-0 in the first, the Yellow Jackets put up a 4-spot in the bottom of the first with a Bell Luebken RBI single and a 3-run shot from Amaral to take an early 4-2 lead.
A Haley 2-run home run in the bottom of the third extended the BHSU lead to 6-2.
CSC would come back, scoring five in the top of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead. But in the bottom of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets stormed back to regain the lead.
A Tyler Whitlock solo shot evened the score at 7-7 before RBI singles from Amaral and Haley, along with a CSC error, put them back on top, 10-7 through four.
The Eagles kept chipping away, but another run in the fifth and then a Lizzy Johnson RBI single in the sixth kept the Yellow Jackets ahead 12-10 entering the final frame.
CSC would score four in the top of the seventh, though, moving ahead for the final time by a score of 14-12, and the Eagles would close out the game with that score.
