Champions crowned as National High School Rodeo Finals wraps up in Gillette

GILLETTE, Wyoming – The National High School Rodeo Finals wrapped up Saturday as champions were crowned in several events.

Several South Dakota cowboys and cowgirls brought home hardware this year.

Thayne Elshere from Hereford, SD was crowned the reserve champion in the saddle bronc with 226 points on three head.

He finished three points behind Statler Wright from Utah who finished as the champion with 229 points. Also in the saddle bronc, Newell’s Cade Costello finished in 16th.

In the barrel racing, Piper Cordes of Wall finished in a solid 13th place.

Three South Dakotans fnished in the top 20 in goat tying. Isabel Risse of Martin came in third, Jaysee Jones of Howes was 8th and Brylee Grubb of Spearfish placed 19th.

In the bareback, Jhett Wright of Porcupine finished in 19th and in the Steer Wrestling, Denton Good of Long Valley came in sixth.

Two South Dakotans finished top ten in the bull riding. Jestyn Woodward of Custer came in 4th and Mason Moody of Letcher finished in eighth.

In the girls cutting, Landry Haugen of Sturgis placed 15th and in the team roping, Tate and Tyan Johnson placed tenth.

In the trap shooting, Jack Anderson finished in sixth and Jenna Kruger placed 14th in rifle.

Overall South Dakota finished sixth in the team standings with 4,258.75 points. In the girls team standings, South Dakota was 7th and in the boys standings, South Dakota placed 6th.

Texas finished in first place overall. Texas also captured the girls team title with Utah winning the reports.
