UNDATED — There will be a new format for the NFL playoffs this postseason.
NFL team owners have voted to expand the playoffs by one team in each conference for a total of 14. Only two teams will get a first-round bye — the teams with the best record in the AFC and NFC.
In the past, the top two teams in each conference skipped wild-card weekend.
The seventh seed will play No. 2, the sixth will visit No. 3 and the fifth will be at the fourth seed for wild-card games.
Wild-card weekend will now have three Saturday games and three on Sunday.
It’s the first expansion of the postseason field since 1990, when the NFL went from 10 qualifiers to 12.
