College rodeo season underway

STURGIS, S.D. – In recent South Dakota college rodeos, Mid-Plains Community College has been a strong contender, with their women’s team placing high in the Great Plains Region standings, and individuals like Kelsie Domer and Rylee George making notable performances. 

Here’s a more detailed look at some recent results and notable performances:

Women’s Standings:

  • Mid-Plains Community College (MIDPLN): has been a top-performing team in the Great Plains Region, with their women’s team placing 3rd in the region standings. 
  • Mitchell Technical College (MTC): also has a strong women’s team, placing 4th in the Great Plains Region. 
  • South Dakota State University (SDSU): has a women’s team that is also in the top 5 in the Great Plains Region. 
  • Black Hills State University (BHSU): has a strong women’s rodeo team, with standout performances at the Cyclone Stampede. 

Men’s Standings:

  • Bismarck State College: led the men’s standings in a recent rodeo. 
  • Fort Scott Community College: and University of Montana, Western are also strong contenders in the men’s competition. 
  • South Dakota State University (SDSU): is also a part of the national standings. 

Individual Standout Performances:

  • Kelsie Domer: (7th in the World) won a round with a time of 2.2. 
  • Rylee George: (14th) took 2nd place in a round with a time of 2.6. 
  • Maddy Deerman: (6th) earned 3rd place with a time of 2.7. 
  • Tayson Jones: earned 4th place in Saddle Bronc Riding with a score of 73.0. 
  • Colton Zubach: won 1st place in Team Roping Header with a time of 16.5. 
  • Koby Douch: won the tie-down roping at the National Intercollege Rodeo Association. 
  • Emilee Pauley (BHSU): won the Women’s All-around. 
  • John Allen (IACCC): won Saddle Bronc Riding with a score of 73.0. 
  • Luke Robert Mavity (BHSU): won the Men’s All-around. 
  • Dion Kahiwa Augustiro (MIDPLN): won Bull Riding. 
  • Riley John Staton (BHSU): won Tie Down Roping. 
  • Austin Frederick Madison (BHSU): won Steer Wrestling

This past weekend at the Iowa State University Cyclone Stampede there were runner-up finishes in goat tying and barrel racing as the pair of Haley Husted and Sierra Steele were the highest placing individuals for the Black Hills State University men’s and women’s rodeo teams as they began their spring schedule at the Cyclone Stampede.

With the Great Plains Region getting back into the heat of competition for the first time since the fall, the Yellow Jackets women’s program recorded a fifth place finish with 175 points while the men’s team notched a tie for ninth place with 80 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED – MEN’S RODEO

  • Jess Harper paired up with Colton Zubach of Dickinson State University once again in the team roping event, a duo that saw success in the fall, and recorded yet another top-5 finish in fourth place overall. In the long go they recorded a time of 8.3 seconds, but they were unable to post a time in the short go. They tallied 80 points in the event.

HOW IT HAPPENED – WOMEN’S RODEO

  • The Yellow Jackets sent three to the short go finals in the goat tying event, eventually coming away with a second and third place finish overall from the pair of Haley Husted and Capri Cammack. Husted posted a time of 7.2 seconds on both the long go and short go for a total of 14.4 seconds and 110 points, while Cammack recorded a time of 7.3 seconds on the long go and 7.2 seconds on the short go for a total time of 14.5 seconds and 85 points. Linley Schmitz advanced to the short go finals with the events fastest time in the long go at 6.6 seconds, however, her tie on the goat came lose at the very end and resulted in a no time in the short go as she finished tenth overall with 60 points from the long go.
  • The pair of Sierra Steele and Raylee Fagerhaug highlighted the Green & Gold in barrel racing, recording a second and sixth place finish respectively in the event. Steele posted a time of 13.92 on the long go and 13.85 on the short go for a total time of 27.77 on two go arounds to secure 150 points, while Fagerhaug tallied a time of 14.28 on the long go and 14.30 on the short go for a total time of 28.58 on two go arounds to secure 25 points.
