STURGIS, SD – The Rapid City Christian Comet girls and boys basketball teams won both games of a doubleheader at West Gym Friday night.
The Lady Comets use relentless defensive pressure and consistent scoring to beat the Scoopers in their first home game, 57-30.
Sturgis handled the pressure well in the opening quarter and trailed Rapid City Christian 16-14 after one. The Scoopers could only manage six points in the second quarter and were down 30-20 at halftime.
The Lady Comets dominated the second half, draining 11-of-24 shots to outrun Sturgis, getting a convincing 57-30 victory.
Rapid City Christian improved to 7-2 and were led by Sadie Marshall with 13 points. Avreigh Long scored eight for the Scoopers, who dropped to 2-3 on the season.
The Rapid City Christian boys came into their game with Sturgis unbeaten and ranked #4 in the latest Class A basketball poll. The Comets showed why they are among the state’s best teams, raining down five three pointers in the first quarter to jump out to a 20-7 lead after one.
The Comets shooting cooled off in the second quarter but they cranked up the defensive pressure, holding Sturgis to just 12 halftime points, leading 29-12 at intermission.
The Scooper boys were outscored 22-13 in the third as the Comets took a 51-25 lead into the final quarter. Both teams brought in reserves in the fourth and Rapid City Christian took home the 59-33 victory to remain undefeated.
The Comets (9-0) made 10 threes and were paced by Benson Kieffer with 16 points. Ryan Heinert had nine points for Sturgis, who fell to 2-4 on the season.
The Scoopers are in action next weekend, as they travel to Rapid City Central on Friday night, then host Stevens at West Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
