PIERRE, S.D. — Two of South Dakota’s election requirements for ballot measures are that the state attorney general must draft a statement explaining the purpose and effects of the measure and that revisions suggested from the public must be considered.
The Legislature used its constitutional power and put two measures on the November ballot. On Friday, South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley released his draft explanations for them.
One draft explains the potential effects of changing male references in the South Dakota Constitution to gender-neutral.
The other draft explains the potential effects of the Legislature considering a work requirement for people who enroll in South Dakota’s expanded Medicaid program.
Those two drafts are now in the 10-day period for public comments. The deadline for submitting comments on them is 5 p.m. CT on Tuesday, May 7.
The comments can be sent by U.S. mail, email or hand-delivered and must include the name and address of the commenter. Emailed comments must include the title of the measure in the subject line.
The email address is [email protected]. The U.S. mail address is Office of the Attorney General, Ballot Comment, 1302 E. Hwy. 14, Suite 1, Pierre, SD 57501.
According to a spokesman, the Attorney General’s Office will not open attachments in an effort to prevent malware or other digital threats.
The attorney general’s final explanations are due to the South Dakota Secretary of State on May 26.
