Containment on First Thunder Fire reaches 77%

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Firefighters have made great strides in suppressing the First Thunder Fire.

The fire is currently 77% contained, occupying 157 acres. Yesterday’s cooler temperatures and scattered rain showers on Wednesday provided much-needed moisture, allowing firefighters to reinforce the fireline.

Pre-evacuation warnings have been lifted in the area. Taylor Ranch, Norseman, Victoria Lake, Buzzard’s Roost Trailhead and Falling Rock have been reopened. Citizens are cautioned to steer clear of the area when possible, despite the re-openings.

100 personnel continue to fight the fire using heavy equipment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
