COVID-19 active cases drop below 10,000 as 594 new cases reported

PIERRE, S.D. – New COVID-19 numbers from the Department of Health Thursday continued to indicate the virus is slowing down across South Dakota.

New cases today totaled 594 with 87 of them listed as probable. Active cases have dropped below 10,000 to 8,756 – a decrease of over 22-hundred from Wednesday.

Hospitalizations have also decreased – down 6 to 406 Thursday.

There was one new COVID-19 related death reported today, sending the death toll since the pandemic began to 1,301.

Across West River counties, there were 151 new cases with Pennington County reporting the most with 77.

Lawrence County reported 10 new cases while Meade County added 14 new COVID-19 cases.

Other new cases across West River Thursday included 9 in Oglala Lakota, 8 in Haakon, 6 each in Dewey and Todd, 5 in Gregory, 3 each in Butte and Custer, 2 each in Corson, Ziebach, Tripp and Bennett and one each in Stanley and Mellette.

Health officials across the state continued administering the new Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine as 1,106 total doses have been doled out.

Pennington County has administered 245 doses, Meade County has administered 30 and Lawrence County has given out 4.
