COVID-19 related death toll rises by 24 Thursday; New cases total 445

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Health Department reported 24 new COVID-19 related deaths Thursday, sending the state’s total to 1,488.

The new deaths were 12 men and 12 women and the youngest death was reported in the 30-39 year age range. Other deaths were in the 40-49, 50-59, 70-79 and 80-plus age range. There have been 542 deaths reported in December.

New cases today totaled 445 with 121 under the probable category.

Active cases decreased by 33 to 5,696 and the number of people hospitalized increased by 4 to 297.

New cases West River totaled 140 with Pennington County reporting 80 of those. Pennington County now has 11,197 total cases with 773 remaining active.

Lawrence County added 14 new cases Thursday and Meade County added 9.

Other new cases West River included 11 in Todd, 5 in Tripp, 4 in Butte, 3 each in Fall River, Oglala Lakota, Dewey and Lyman, 2 in Stanley and one each in Perkins, Corson and Bennett counties.
