COVID-19 related deaths surge past 2,300 as six are reported Thursday

PIERRE, S.D. – Active cases, hospitalizations and deaths continue to climb Thursday as the State Department of Health reported 486 new COVID-19 cases. Of those 485, there are 167 listed under the probable category.

Active cases are back up over 67-hundred today as health officials report 6,775; and the number of hospitalizations rose by 7 to 246.

Six new deaths have been reported, sending the state’s toll above 23-hundred to 2,303. More than half of the new deaths are in the Black Hills area with 3 out of Pennington County and one out of Meade County.

New cases across the Black Hills area totaled 99. Pennington County had the most new cases with 55 confirmed and 6 probable.

Lawrence County had the next highest amount of 14 and Meade County reported 11 new cases.

Elsewhere, there were 4 new cases each in Custer and Fall River County, 3 new cases in Butte County and 2 new cases out of Oglala Lakota County.
