COVID cases see increase over the past week

STURGIS, S.D. – COVID-19 cases saw an increase over the past week, according to the South Dakota Department of Health’s weekly report.

State health officials reported 277 new cases over the past week, with active cases increasing from 412 to 540.

The number of people hospitalized remained at 38 this week, but eleven new deaths were reported. The new deaths send the state’s death toll to 2,912. Just one new death was reported out of the Black Hills area – from Custer County.

Across the Black Hills area, there were 79 new cases. Pennington County accounted for the most with 58. Meade County had the second highest amount with 10. Lawrence and Oglala Lakota County each added 4 new cases and there were 2 new cases in Fall River County. Custer County reported the remaining new case.

There are 116 active cases in Pennington with 16 and 14 active cases in Meade and Lawrence counties respectively.
