STURGIS, S.D. – A car vs motorcycle crash occurred around 2:00 o’clock this (Monday) afternoon, sending Sturgis first responders to the scene.
The accident happened right in between the I-90 Exit 32 westbound off ramp and the I-90 Exit 32 on ramp.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater says a motorcycle was traveling west on I-90 and took exit 32. When the motorcycle came to the stop sign to turn left (south) on junction, the motorcycle failed to stop at the stop sign and was hit by a vehicle traveling north on Junction.
The motorcycle rider was trapped under the car and had to be extricated. The rider received life threatening injuries and was transported to Sturgis Hospital and was life-flighted to Rapid City Hospital in critical condition.
The area was shut down for a few hours after the incident while the scene was mapped by the Highway Patrol
Responding agencies were Sturgis Police, Fire and Ambulance, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Meade County Sheriffs Officer, and SD Game Fish and Park. Special thanks for the quick response by Plains Towing to assist in the extrication of the trapped rider.
Sturgis Police, Meade County Sheriff’s Office, Sturgis Ambulance, Sturgis Fire and South Dakota Highway Patrol were among those on scene.
The accident remains under investigation.
