Crews strengthening lines at First Thunder Fire

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Firefighters are conducting mop up work as progress continues on the lines of the First Thunder Fire southwest of Rapid City.

Incident Commander Brandon Sanchez says containment on the fire remains at 41% and the size of the fire remains at 157 acres. During this morning’s fire briefing, he says lines have held good overnight.

Sanchez says today they will continue working on further containment.

Sanchez says multiple air resources have also aided ground crews with suppression efforts.

Jason Mitzel with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says the pre-evacuation notices have been lifted, but some roads in the area of the fire remain closed today.

And officials are still stressing no drones in the fire area. Officials say drones are dangerous and can hamper any air support needed on the fire.

A three-day trend is predicted to bring favorable weather to the Black Hills. Temperatures into the 70s and higher relative humidities are expected.

Scattered showers yesterday were aiding in fire suppression.
