CUSTER, S.D. — Custer County Commissioners have voted to rescind an ordinance that allowed the carrying of guns into the county courthouse.
The moves follows the South Dakota Supreme Court’s approval of an order by 7th Circuit Judge Craig Pfeifle, which states that judges would not physically appear in the Custer County Courtroom because of concerns for their safety.
Since the approval, cases were being held in Pennington County.
Commission Chairman Jim Lintz says having to hold court proceedings at the Pennington County Courthouse was a burden for taxpayers and those having to make the 80-mile round trip between Custer and Rapid City.
Lintz says court proceedings will immediately return to the courthouse in Custer, and that the gun ordinance will be reconsidered in six months.
