STURGIS, SD – The Custer Wildcat girls and boys basketball teams took both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday night at West Gymnasium.
The Custer girls came out hot, led by post player Alice Sedlacek’s seven points and jumped out to a 20-6 first quarter lead.  The Scoopers got on track and outscored Custer 11-6 in the second to close the gap a little, and headed to the locker room down 26-17 to the Wildcats.
Sturgis got within six points at the end of the third, 38-32, but Custer used free throw shooting to outlast the Scoopers 53-44 to improve their record to 4-3. Sturgis falls to 2-5.Â
Sedlack led the Wildcats with 16 points and 10 rebounds  Kaylee Whatley dropped in 16 points for the Scoopers.
The second game of the doubleheader was a back and forth affair, with neither team leading by more than eight throughout the game.  The Wildcat boys led 22-20 at the half and 35-30 after three quarters.  The Scoopers outscored Custer 12-7 in the fourth with Jake Vliem calmly sinking two free throws at the end of regulation  to send the game into overtime tied at 42.
The game went into a second overtime tied at 50 apiece. Custer senior Gage Tennyson took over and scored all of the Wildcats points in the second extra period to give Custer a 55-52 victory.
The Wildcats improved to 5-2 as Sturgis fell to 1-6.
Tennyson led the Wildcats with 17 points and nine boards. Freshman Kyle Virtue added 16 and 11 rebounds. Ty Buus made three 3’s and led Sturgis with 11 points. Owen Cass added 10 points and six boards.Â
The Sturgis girls host St. Thomas More on Thursday night. Tip off is scheduled for 7pm. The Scooper boys travel to St. Thomas More on Saturday for a 6pm matchup.Â
