STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Commission this week lent their support for a planned rebuild of I-90, Exit 46.
The commission sent a letter to the Department of Transportation in support of the project — and asked if the reconfiguration could be moved up from it’s proposed 2024 start date.
The D.O.T. says the current design at Ext 46, known as the Elk Creek Exit, has safety and operational concerns due to its proximity to Elk Creek Road and Sturgis Road to the west. The at-grade railroad crossing on the east side of the Interstate and the narrow bridge not providing a pedestrian and bicycle lane are also concerns.
The new exit will be built just to the south of the current one. The project will also include a realignment of Elk Creek Road and adjacent roads in the area.
